Do You Kiss, Touch or Ignore your friends?

by Sunday, November 22, 2015

Growing up in Italy and spent my life with creatives in Dance, Fashion and Art I really ‘ touch people’… It is good? Bad? In my case, it is a genuine act of empathy. But at the same time  it is difficult accept  some odd handshakes, when they are too week or too strong.  When I moved to London  I was surprised to find that most people does not ‘kiss hello and hug goodbye’… I just crushed in a research from ’60 by Sidney Jourard, who studied the conversations of friends in different parts of the world as they sat in a café together. He observed these conversations for the same amount of time in each of the different countries. What did he find? In England, the two friends touched each other zero times. In the United States, in bursts of enthusiasm, they touched each other twice,  the French,  made contact over 180 times…I’m sure pretty much the same with Italians…

Touch provides its own language of compassion, a language that is essential to what it means to be human! (Dacher Keltner)

How often do you touch people? Do you hug and kiss your friends?
