Homemade organic body butter

Nowadays, organic products are becoming more and more popular. Demand for all-natural cosmetics also affects its price and sometimes even quality. If you read carefully through the ingredients of most organic production, you will find numerous synthetic ingredients and preservatives. But as the famous saying goes “If you want a thing well done, do it yourself.” So let’s see a recipe for 100% natural homemade body butter.

It seems like a job for professional, but actually anybody can do that. You just need to know the ingredients that work for you.

The basics for our body butter are coconut oil and cocoa butter (1 cup of each). Though it is called butter, but no worries, it absorbs perfectly well. Coconut oil has been used as a moisturizer for ages, it also serves as a good anti-bacterial material and helps to calm down allergies and insect bites. Cocoa butter softens and moisturizes skin and gives that tasty chocolate smell to our body bitter. So the next step varies depending on your skin type, fragrance preference, and the effect you want to achieve. You have to add approximately 10 drops of essential oil. For dry skin use rose, jasmine or sandal oil; for oily it’s better to use lemon, orange or bergamot essential oil; for sensitive skin use verbena oil. Do not overuse the essential oils. They are extremely strong; it may even burn your skin!

So the technology is simple:

– put together coconut oil and cocoa butter (chopped in small pieces) in a large saucepan and melt on the medium heat till its fully liquid. Don’t forget to stir!

– place the mixture in a fridge till it’s solid again. Usually it takes about an hour.

– add your essential oils and whip everything with a mixer.

Voila, it’s done!

A few advices: better to store this homemade body butter in normal temperature. If it is too hot, it will melt, or become too solid in the cold place. Anyway, you can always transfer it and the consistence will change, so no mistake can be done here. Another advice – it is better used within a month. Nothing too strict, but natural products are not so long-living as the usual cosmetics.

Enjoy!
